Our Core Focus: Elder Law And Related Areas
Aging is an integral part of life. Growing old comes with many beautiful moments, but it also comes with challenges. At Barna Law, we dedicate our practice to helping people navigate those challenges so they can enjoy their later years and live life to the fullest.
We work with senior clients throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania. Additionally, adult children often come to us for help with addressing the financial needs of their aging parents. No matter which stage in life you’re at, there is immense value to knowing your options. Whether planning ahead or dealing with a loved one who is already in a nursing home, there are critical steps that can be taken to help protect your loved ones and your hard-earned assets.
Addressing All Of Your Elder Law Concerns
We provide guidance on all aspects of elder law, including:
- Long-term care planning
- Trust planning, including irrevocable, revocable, supplemental needs, and others
- Asset protection and nursing home care
- Medicaid planning
- Estate planning
- Inheritance taxes and receiving a step-up in basis for assets at death
By drawing on our robust experience and in-depth knowledge of Pennsylvania law, we can help you put the right tools into place to address your elder law concerns.
Filial Support Claims
Pennsylvania is one of few states that takes a strong stance on filial support. Under our state’s filial support law (also called a filial piety law), adult children are financially responsible for their parents who are unable to support themselves. This law means that nursing homes can pursue adult children for costs associated with their parents’ care.
Planning ahead is the best way to avoid unexpected financial responsibilities as the adult child of an aging parent, or as an aging parent who doesn’t want to financially burden your adult children. We can help you implement strategies such as Medicaid planning to safeguard your finances and family, while also securing the right care.
